Linear encoders play a major role in measuring the position of a tool, ensuring accuracy and precision. There are two major types of linear encoders, namely sealed and exposed linear encoders. While sealed encoders offer protection from dust, debris, and other contaminants in the environment, exposed linear encoders offer no such protection. So, when is it best to opt for exposed linear encoders? This blog covers the basics and applications where these digital encoders are required.
What Are Exposed Linear Encoders?
An exposed linear encoder comprises a scanning head connected to a scale. They use photoelectricity to sense the position of the tool, allowing for a high degree of accuracy. This makes it possible to detect position changes within a span of micrometers.
Applications Requiring The Use Of Exposed Linear Encoders
Semiconductor Manufacturing
Semiconductor manufacturing is known for its highly demanding conditions, where even the smallest of errors can be significant. To mitigate this, exposed linear encoders are used as they can tackle even the tiniest margins. Moreover, since semiconductor manufacturing happens in nearly sterile conditions, this type of linear encoder does not run the risk of being exposed to contaminants.
Precision Measuring Equipment
Exposed linear encoders are also excellent in cases where precision measuring equipment is required. Classic examples include coordinate measuring machines (CMM), measuring microscopes and comparators. Since the digital encoder is not sealed, it contributes towards a higher degree of accuracy and precision.
However, if the operating environment is a bit harsh, that is, there is possible exposure to dust, coolants or other such contaminants, then its better to opt for sealed encoders or perhaps even magnetic encoders. Similarly, if the level of precision required is not too high, then it would be more cost-effective to opt for a sealed linear encoder as exposed ones are more expensive.
